Sydney packing list

What to pack for Sydney depends on your season. Remember: Australia's seasons are reversed — summer is December–February, winter is June–August. UV is extreme year-round regardless of temperature.

Key Sydney packing reminders

  • SPF50+ is non-negotiable — Australian UV index regularly hits "extreme" (11+), even in winter.
  • Type I adapter — Australia's plug is unique (3 flat pins in a V-shape). EU, US and UK plugs won't fit without an adapter.
  • Opal card or contactless payment — you don't need cash for public transport. Tap on/off with any Visa/Mastercard or phone.
  • Swim between the flags — rip currents are serious. Only swim at patrolled beaches between the red/yellow flags.
  • No heavy clothes needed — even in "winter", Sydney rarely drops below 10°C. Leave the ski gear at home.
