Sydney day trip planner
Sydney is surrounded by extraordinary day-trip destinations. Use this planner to compare distances, drive times, train options and what each destination is best for.
Filter by interest:
Blue Mountains
Easy 104 km 1h 30m – 1h 45m by car
Train/public transport ~2 hours (Central → Katoomba, Blue Mountains Line)
Minimum day length 8 hours
Highlights:
- Three Sisters / Echo Point
- Scenic World (cable car, railway, walkway)
- Katoomba village
- Leura village
- Jenolan Caves (add extra time)
Leave by 8am to beat the tour bus crowds at Echo Point. Return train is more relaxing than driving in peak traffic.
Hunter Valley
Easy 160–170 km 2h – 2h 30m by car
Train/public transport Not practical by train (Newcastle + bus = 3h+ each way)
Minimum day length 9 hours
Highlights:
- Pokolbin wine region (Tyrrell's, De Bortoli, Brokenwood)
- Hunter Valley Gardens
- Cheese factories and chocolate shops
- Scenic Cessnock countryside
A guided tour is strongly recommended — you can drink! Driving yourself means one person stays sober.
Port Stephens
Easy to Moderate 209 km 2h 30m – 3h by car
Train/public transport Train to Newcastle then bus (3h+ each way)
Minimum day length 10 hours
Highlights:
- Dolphin watching cruise (guaranteed sightings common)
- Stockton Bight sand dunes (largest moving dunes in southern hemisphere)
- Sandboarding
- Nelson Bay waterfront
- Whale watching (May–Nov)
Best as a guided day tour from Sydney — the distance makes self-drive tight for a single day. Some tours combine dolphin cruise + sandboarding.
Jervis Bay
Easy 196 km 2h 30m – 3h by car
Train/public transport No direct service — drive or guided tour
Minimum day length 10 hours
Highlights:
- Hyams Beach (whitest sand in the world)
- Booderee National Park
- Dolphin watching
- Whale watching (Jun–Nov)
- Kangaroos on the beach
The drive south is scenic but long. A guided tour saves parking stress and includes Kiama Blowhole on the way.
Canberra (ACT)
Easy ~240 km 3h – 3h 30m by car
Train/public transport NSW TrainLink to Canberra: ~3h 30m from Central (book ahead)
Minimum day length 11 hours
Highlights:
- Parliament House (free entry)
- Australian War Memorial
- National Gallery of Australia (free)
- Lake Burley Griffin
- Floriade flower festival (Sep–Oct)
The furthest day trip — start early. A guided coach tour is most efficient. Great for culture and history fans.
Wollongong & Grand Pacific Drive
Easy 80–90 km 1h 15m by car
Train/public transport ~1h 30m from Central (Illawarra Line)
Minimum day length 7 hours
Highlights:
- Sea Cliff Bridge (iconic coastal road)
- Kiama Blowhole
- Royal National Park (world's second oldest national park)
- Wollongong beaches
- Shellharbour
The Grand Pacific Drive south is one of the best coastal drives in Australia. Easy by train too.
Driving in NSW — key notes
- Left-hand traffic — Australia drives on the left. Adjust your mirrors and habits before heading out of the city.
- Toll roads — Sydney has extensive tolling (M2, M7, Eastern Distributor, etc.). Rental cars usually have an e-TAG or you arrange a day pass. Budget AUD 15–30 for tolls on most day trips.
- Speed limits — 50 km/h urban, 100 km/h on highways, 110 km/h on some motorways. Speed cameras are common.
- Fuel — petrol stations outside Sydney can be scarce. Fill up before leaving the city, especially for Blue Mountains or Hunter Valley.
- Guided tours vs self-drive — for Hunter Valley (wine) and Port Stephens (long distance), a guided tour is usually better value and more relaxing.
