Opal card tips for visitors

  • No Opal card needed — you can use any contactless Visa/Mastercard or Apple/Google Pay directly. Same caps apply.
  • Airport surcharge — a station access fee of ~AUD 14.60 applies each time you pass through Sydney Airport stations (T1, T2/T3). This is on top of your normal Opal fare and is NOT capped.
  • Ferry travel — Manly and Parramatta ferries have higher base fares (AUD 9.20 for Manly). Still capped within daily/weekly limits.
  • Tap on AND off — you must tap off when leaving trains and ferries. Forgetting costs you the maximum fare for that mode.
  • Plan ferry-heavy days on Fri–Sun — with the AUD 9.65 cap, you can ride ferries all day for less than a single Manly fare on a weekday.
  • Weekly cap resets Monday — the AUD 50 cap runs Monday 12:00am to Sunday 11:59pm.
  • Where to get Opal — convenience stores (7-Eleven, newsagents), train stations, ferry terminals. Available immediately at Sydney Airport.
